4,980 lecturers received N10.8bn in postgraduate scholarships, says TETFUND
No fewer than 4,980 academics from Nigerian public universities received the sum of N10.8bn worth of scholarships for Masters, doctoral and post-doctoral degrees, among others, between June 2023 and July 2024, data obtained from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund has revealed.
TETFund, a government intervention agency popularly referred to as the “brainchild” of the Academic Staff Union of Universities was formed as a product of the Education Tax Act of 1993.
According to the data obtained by our correspondent in Abuja on Friday, the sum of N340m was disbursed for the bench work for 24 academics in foreign universities.
The data also revealed that the sum of N967m was disbursed for the training of 10 Nigerian academics in foreign universities and 368 in local universities for master’s degrees.

Further analysis also revealed that the sum of N8.6bn was expended for the training of 68 academics in foreign universities and 1,156 academics in local universities for PhDs.
The data also revealed that the sum of N921m was disbursed for post-doctoral training of 31 Nigerian lecturers in foreign universities during the period under review.
Saturday PUNCH, however, gathered that some beneficiaries of the scholarships have refused to return.
The latest available data by TETFund revealed that 137 lecturers who were sponsored abroad absconded and the agency had begun plans to repatriate them. (PUNCH)
