NUJ donates relief materials, cash to 20 families of late journalists in Kebbi

The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kebbi State Council, has donated relief materials and cash to 18 families of the late journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday.

The State Chairman of the union, Alhaji Hamza Galadima, said the gesture was part of the union’s annual commitment to help the families of the late members of the union in the state.

“We are yet again here to observe an annual ritual by NUJ to show love to these who have lost their loved ones in the course of servicing humanity,” he said.

He said that it was a noble course that the union were doing to accommodate families of the late colleagues in the state.

He also called on other journalists and the general public to lend helping hands to the families of their fallen colleagues by visiting their homes and making donations.

Galadima explained that the gesture was secured by the union from well- to-do individuals members of the society.

According to him, the decision to donate the items is to support the families at this time when the assistance is most needed.

Also speaking, the Head of Service, Alhaji Safiyanu Garba-Bena, described the gesture as “Godly deed”, particularly during Ramadan period.

” This is deed that Allah and His Prophet are pleased with; they are pleased with those who commit themselves in helping orphans and less- privileged members of the society,” he said.

Garba-Bena, represented by Acting Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information and Culture, Alhaji Aliyu Bunza, urged well- to-do- individuals to emulate the NUJ body.

He said the act could help in cushioning the effect of hardship and difficulties faced by the families of the deceased in the state.

In his remarks, the National Vice President of the NUJ, Zone A, Alhaji Muhammad Tukur-Umar, thanked the NUJ for initiating the gesture and assisting the families of their late colleagues.

“We thank Engineer In- charge of Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) in the state, Rilwanu Usman-Zagga, Labana Rice Mill Limited, Personal Assistant to Governor Bagudu, Alhaji Faruku Musa-Yaro, among others for their contributions.

“This will definitely go a long way in cushioning the effect of some of the challenges they face, especially in this period.

“We are calling on you to still sustain it and do more, and also call on other state councils of the NUJ to emulate this wonderful initiative by the Kebbi state NUJ chapter,” he said.

The materials donated to each family included 50kg bag of rice, N5,000, milk and sugar among others.
