Erik Ten Hag has signed a one-year contract extension as the manager of Manchester United, keeping him at the helm until 2026. The club triggered the extension on Thursday, ensuring Ten Hag’s continued leadership for the 2024-25 season and beyond.
Ten Hag, who took over at Manchester United in 2022 after leaving Ajax, initially had a contract that was set to expire in 2025. Expressing his satisfaction with the new agreement, he said, “I am very pleased to have reached an agreement with the club to continue working together. Looking back at the past two years, we can reflect with pride on two trophies and many examples of progression from where we were when I joined.”
Under Ten Hag’s management, Manchester United achieved notable success in his first season, finishing third in the Premier League and winning the Carabao Cup. Despite a difficult 2023-24 season that saw the team finish eighth in the league, Ten Hag led the club to a significant 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the FA Cup final, securing a spot in the Europa League.
In addition to the contract extension, Manchester United is set to appoint former striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy as Ten Hag’s assistant coach. This move is part of a broader strategy under the club’s newly-appointed Sporting Director, Dan Ashworth, who expressed optimism about the team’s future.
“This group of players and staff have already shown they are capable of competing and winning at the top level; now we need to do it more consistently. With our strengthened football leadership team now in place, we are looking forward to working hand-in-hand with Erik to achieve our shared ambitions for this football club,” Ashworth said.
Manchester United will kick off their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Old Trafford on August 16.
