Flood Control: Yobe ACReSAL Engages With Damaturu Emirate

DAMATURU – In continuation with its sensitization exercise on the 11.7km Damaturu/Buniyadi Gully Erosion and Flood Control project, Yobe Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) on Thursday conducted high level stakeholders engagement with Damaturu Emirate council.

The rationale behind the continued sensitization was to adequately educate communities in order to address all necessary concerns prior to the project formal take-off.

Addressing community leaders at the palace of the Emir of Damaturu, the State Project Coordinator, Shehu Alhaji Mohammed has sought for guidance and blessing of His Royal Highness the Emir of Damaturu, Alh Shehu Hashimi Ibn Umar Elkanemi and his subject.

Mohammed stated that Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) and Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) are two vital studies that will pave way for the successful implementation of the project.

He said the gully erosion work in Damaturu spans about 8.9km lengths starting from Nasarawa bypass down to Sussuma.

He added that the design would affect 200 persons involving 85 structures, 43 pieces of lands, 86 farm lands, 10 economic trees and 14 businesses.

Meanwhile, His Royal Highness the Emir of Damaturu, Alh Shehu Hashimi Ibn Umar Elkanemi has assured the team of the maximum cooperation of his subject.

The Emir stressed that Damaturu flood control project is one of the pressing demands of Damaturu residents over the last four decades.

” Let me recast our minds back to late 1987 where a devastating flood incident that left many properties destroyed occurred. At that point in time it was decided that the main road linking Damaturu to Maiduguri must be cut-off for the flood water to recede.

” Since that time we’ve been clamouring for flood control project but unsuccessful until now under the administration of His Excellency Governor Mai Mala Buni through ACReSAL project intervention”.

The sensitization ends with presentation of copy of names of Project Affected Persons to His Royal Highness the Emir.
