Yobe Governor Launches Massive Ramadan Food Distribution

Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has initiated a major Ramadan relief program, distributing 35,000 bags of rice and essential condiments to vulnerable residents across the state.

This “Ramadan Food Basket” initiative aims to support 30,000 households, along with other key groups.

Beyond the food packages, the state government is also expanding its traditional Ramadan feeding centers.

Governor Buni announced an investment of ₦297 million to provide meals at these centers, which have been increased from 85 to 102 locations this year. Notably, many of the new centers are situated within health institutions, ensuring access for those in need of medical care.

The beneficiaries of this comprehensive food distribution include internally displaced persons (IDPs), 1,500 teachers and junior staff from educational boards, 500 resident doctors, individuals affected by recent floods and poor harvests, and other disadvantaged members of the community.

Governor Buni emphasized the state’s ongoing commitment to its citizens, highlighting past relief efforts. “Our commitment to the welfare of the people of Yobe State goes beyond seasonal interventions,” he stated.”

He referenced the government’s response to the 2024 floods, which included emergency relief in partnership with federal and development agencies.

Furthermore, the state is investing in long-term solutions, such as erosion, flood, and water harvesting projects in Damaturu and Buni Yadi, with plans to expand these initiatives to other flood-prone areas.

In November 2024, the government launched two significant economic empowerment programs, distributing ₦1.4 billion to 25,500 flood victims and vulnerable groups, with each recipient receiving ₦50,000. Additionally, ₦1 billion was allocated to support 10,000 small business owners, providing each with ₦100,000.

Governor Buni stressed the importance of community support, urging residents to assist their neighbors during Ramadan. “We all have a collective responsibility to complement government’s efforts to see that your neighbour does not break his fast, or go to bed on empty stomach,” he said, calling for kindness, generosity, and solidarity.

He concluded by urging those responsible for the distribution to carry out their duties with transparency and integrity, ensuring that the aid reaches its intended recipients. He prayed for a peaceful and prosperous Ramadan and for continued progress in building a stronger Yobe State.
