GBV: AGILE cautions female students against secret relationships with teachers, staff
The Zamfara Office of the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment’(AGILE), on Wednesday conducted a school-based awareness campaign on gender-based violence prevention in Government Girl’s Arabic Secondary Schools (GGASS), Gusau.
During the campaign, the students of the college were urged to avoid secret relationship with teachers, staff or any person in the school.
The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the awareness campaign was conducted by NGOs such as Women Rights Advancement And Protection, (WRAPA). Baobab for Women’s Rights, and the State Sexual Assault Referral Centre. (SARC).
The State Coordinator, Baobab for Women’s Rights, Hajiya Rabi Ibrahim, said the one-day event focused on enhancing students’ awareness on ‘Sexual Exploitation and Abuse, Sexual Harassment and Students’ reporting channels.
Ibrahim stated that the event was part of the activities of the AGILE project in making girls school’s environment safe from GBV and any form of abuse or harm.
She urged the students to avoid unnecessary movements during and after school hours.
“As students, I urge you to desist from secret relationship engagements with male or female teachers or staff.
“I urge you to avoid visiting teachers’ houses, you should remain in your classes and hostels,” she added.
In her presentation, Dr Amina Hassan, Head of Zamfara SARC, lamented the rising GBV cases in the society, urging that all stakeholders must work together towards addressing the menace.
Hassan urged the students to always monitor their surroundings, admonishing, “you should be careful on who to relate with.
“You should make sure that you report any suspicious movement or attempts to destroy your lives immediately.
“Even if your teachers or colleagues are trying to destroy your lives, you must report them immediately to the school management.

“As students, you are not allowed to visit any teacher in his or her house, you are not allowed stay alone with him,”she explained.
Hassan urged the students to focus on their studies, adding,”as young ladies, you have a brighter future ahead.$
Earlier, the Principal of the college, Malama Hauwa Shehu, commended the AGILE project for selecting the school for the campaign.
The principal urged the students to utilise the opportunity of the campaign and put what they learnt into practice towards protecting themselves from GBV.
According to her, the school management must always sensitise the students even in the classrooms on GBV issues and their negative implications.
“This is one of the areas that must be given priority by the school management.
“The school should always update the students on GBV issues,”she added.
