A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Save the Children International (SCI), has organised a 3-day capacity building workshop for selected journalists from Katsina and Adamawa States.
The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that at the exercise in Kaduna on Wednesday, Ms Adesulure Mogbonjubade, the SCI Digital Media and Communications Specialist, said the training is aimed to strengthen collaboration with the journalists.
According to her, it is also designed to explore how the media can support project visibility goals and also to build their capacity for ethical, inclusive, and impactful reporting.
She said that the participants were expected to understand SCI’s mission and work, especially through the Phil Integrated Health and Nutrition (IHN), and also Education Cannot Wait (ECW) projects.
“The participants are expected to learn how the media can support and amplify these project efforts responsibly, and commit to responsible coverage of issues related to children.
“You’re also expected to acquire more knowledge on reporting accurately and sensitively on the organisation’s interventions, efforts, activities and impact.
“And also to ensure the programme’s impact and reflect key messaging without sensationalism,” Mogbonjubade said.
Also, Mrs Atine Lewi, the SCI’s Programme Manger, said that at the end of the training, participants should be able to develop a local media strategy or action plan to support project efforts, key activities, and child-focused advocacy.
“And also identify opportunities for sustained media engagement beyond the workshop,” Lewi said.

The communication specialist said the journalists would be able to learn how to apply ethical and Child-Sensitive reporting standards, and commit to ethical journalism practices, especially when reporting on children and vulnerable communities.
According to Lewi, “the training should be able to build participants’ practical skills, improve storytelling techniques, multimedia reporting, and data-driven journalism.
“They will also learn how to use tools for impactful reporting, especially mobile journalism, photography, and also social media amplification.
“To promote collaboration and networking, through engagement with fellow journalists and SCI staff, and to explore opportunities for joint media initiatives, campaigns and media opportunities.”
