Student union advocates for nationwide EDON expansion
The National President of the National Association of Nigeria Colleges of Education Students (NANCES), Mr Kur Ushahember, on Monday called for nationwide expansion of the Electronic Education Initiative (EDON) to modernise teacher education.
Ushahember described the initiative as a trailblasing contribution to Nigeria’s digital transformation in higher education, particularly in colleges of education, equipping future teachers with advanced learning tools and global classroom exposure.
The EDON Digital Education Initiative, also called the Electronic Education Initiative (e-DON), is a technology-driven project designed to modernise teaching and learning in tertiary institutions, particularly colleges of education training the nation’s future educators.
Ushahember said the initiative had empowered universities, polytechnics, and especially colleges of education with cutting-edge tools supporting modern teaching, interactive classrooms, global learning exposure, and collaboration between students and lecturers for enhanced education.
He explained that EDON was more than a project; it represented a pathway to modernising Nigeria’s teacher-training institutions, ensuring students benefited from technology-driven teaching methods and gained global competence in education practices.
According to Ushahember, colleges of education are experiencing a historic transformation as technology reshapes how lecturers teach and students learn, collaborate, and engage both within classrooms and through virtual global interactions.
He urged the Federal Ministry of Education, TETFund, Committee of Provosts for Colleges of Education, and the National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) to support expansion, institutionalisation, and scaling of the EDON initiative nationwide.
The initiative’s 98-inch QR Interactive Board and EDON 3D Animation Simulation software, Ushahember recommended, should be replicated in all Nigerian colleges of education to strengthen digital literacy and modern classroom teaching techniques.
He emphasised that nationwide adoption would enhance ICT-enabled teaching, improved students’ global competitiveness, and created a future-ready teacher education system aligned with global standards for teaching and learning outcomes.

The NANCES president affirmed that the union recognised EDON as a vital partner in building a modern, future-ready education system, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to improving teacher training and national educational development.
Former NANCES President, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, recalled that the union had advocated for digitising teacher education since 2018 to ensure Nigerian-trained teachers met international quality standards and global education expectations.
Abubakar highlighted the introduction of 98-inch electronic interactive boards under EDON leadership, allowing aspiring teachers to engage with peers globally, thereby improving learning outcomes and fostering collaboration beyond traditional classroom limitations.
He added that the initiative ensured Nigeria continued producing competent, globally competitive teachers, avoiding substandard training, and equipping graduates with the skills necessary to meet international educational standards and classroom effectiveness.
