Yobe governor hails Daniski-Gudi festival as tourism booster

Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has described the Daniski-Gudi Hill Cultural Festival as a vital platform for boosting tourism and preserving the state’s rich cultural heritage.

Buni, represented by his deputy, Alhaji Idi Gubana, spoke on Saturday at the 2026 Daniski-Gudi Hill Cultural Festival in Daniski.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the festival celebrates the culture of the Bolewa people, mainly found in Fika and Potiskum.

The governor urged residents to use the festival to promote peace and unity among Yobe’s diverse ethnic communities.

He said his administration was considering providing facilities at the festival venue to enhance its appeal and sustainability.

Buni also confirmed the constitution of a committee to revive cultural festivals across the state.

He said the committee would work with traditional institutions to ensure each emirate council hosts at least one cultural festival.

The Emir of Fika, Dr Muhammad Abali, said the festival featured traditional dances and exhibitions of local crafts.

He described the event as critical to social cohesion, heritage preservation and reconnecting people with their roots and traditions.

The emir thanked the governor, saying his support showed “a clear commitment to promoting our cultural values and heritage”.

Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Service, Alhaji Hamidu Babi, traced the origin of the Bolewa people to Daniski.

“It was in Daniski that the Bolewa first laid claim to a defined territory after migrating from the shores of Lake Chad,” he said.

Babi said Daniski’s naturally fortified hills provided security, protecting inhabitants from attacks and external influence.

“This helped preserve their beliefs and traditions, enabling a settlement that once housed at least 15,000 people,” he added.

The festival was attended by several traditional rulers, including the emirs of Bade, Damaturu, Biu, Askira and Shalleng.
