NCC, NDPC Signed MoU to Strengthen Data Privacy in Communications Sector

In a significant move to bolster digital trust and security, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Signed on February 5, 2026, at the NCC Headquarters in Abuja, this agreement aims to enhance the enforcement of data privacy and protection within Nigeria’s rapidly expanding telecommunications sector.

The MoU establishes a structured framework for both regulatory bodies to collaboratively advance data protection and foster regulatory synergy across Nigeria’s digital landscape.

Dr. Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of the NCC, emphasized the critical role of data protection and privacy in the future of the communications industry.

He highlighted that effective data regulation is paramount for sustaining trust, driving innovation, and ensuring continued growth, especially as Nigeria embraces the digital and artificial intelligence eras.

Dr. Maida underscored the NCC’s commitment to working with the NDPC to safeguard the privacy rights of Nigerians while maintaining a robust and forward-looking communications network, noting the sector’s impressive growth from half a million to over 170 million active connections.

Maida further stressed that emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) are heavily reliant on user-generated data, making it imperative for citizens to be aware of the data they produce and their associated rights.

He cautioned that a lack of awareness could lead to data being monetized without the consent or benefit of its owners, potentially undermining national sovereignty.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner and CEO of the NDPC, echoed these sentiments, describing the MoU as essential for protecting Nigerian data.

He stressed the importance of immediate implementation to ensure the effective safeguarding of citizens’ data privacy, emphasizing that collaboration and knowledge sharing between the NCC and NDPC will strengthen Nigeria’s overall data protection ecosystem.
