Valentine’s Day: Cleric admonishes youths, says true love goes beyond feelings

The Executive Secretary, Caritas Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Peter Babangida-Audu, has urged youths in Nigeria, to exhibit responsible conducts in the society,  as they celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Babangida-Audu gave the advice on Saturday in Lagos, in his Valentine Day message to the youths.

He cautioned youths against engaging in acts of immorality in the name Valentine’s  day celebration.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT MEWS) reports that many individuals had derailed from the original aim of the Valentine’s day celebration, which focuses on the biblical concept of agape love.

Many have misinterpreted the concept as a day to engage in immoral behaviours which sadly, have often led to despair and regrets.

Addressing the youths in his message, Babangida-Audu said: “My dear young people of Nigeria, today, as the world marks Valentine’s Day, many celebrate love with flowers, gifts, and kind words.

“But beyond the colours and excitement, I invite you to reflect on a deeper truth; love is not just a feeling,  it is a responsibility.

“True love is patient; true love is respectful; true love  does not manipulate, pressure, exploit, or destroy; In a generation flooded with social media trends and unrealistic expectations, you must guard your heart and your dignity.

“Never reduce yourself to gain attention, never trade your values for temporary affection; You are too precious for that.

“Love should make you better, not bitter.

“It should build your future not break your focus; It should inspire purpose, not derail destiny.

“On this Valentine’s Day, I urge you to love God deeply, love your parents and mentors respectfully, love your country responsibly and
love your future intentionally,” he said

Meanwhile, he cautioned that where one choses to love someone romantically,  it should be rooted in respect, mutual growth and shared values.

“As we move towards the general election in 2027,  I want you to know that Nigeria needs young men and women who understand that love is strength, not weakness, sacrifice, not selfishness, commitment, not convenience.

“May your hearts be guided by wisdom, your relationships be honourable and may your
dreams remain bigger than your distractions,” he stated.

He consequently, urged Nigerians to stay focused, pure and purposeful, with hope and confidence.
