Kebbi Govt. hands over revitalised Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital unit to CMD

The Kebbi Government on Thursday handed over the revitalised Accident and Emergency Unit of Sir Yahaya Memorial Hospital in Birnin Kebbi to the hospital management to improve service delivery.

Speaking at the handover in Birnin Kebbi, State Commissioner for Health, Alhaji Isma’ila Yakubu-Augie said the rehabilitation reflects Gov. Nasir Idris’ commitment to strengthening healthcare across the state.

Yakubu-Augie said the unit had undergone a major transformation from its previous state, noting that it forms part of the government’s ongoing investment in the health sector.

“We thank the governor for his continued support. Healthcare remains a priority for this administration.

“The facility was in a deplorable state before, but it is now a modern, functional unit serving the people.

“I urge health workers and stakeholders to ensure proper use and maintenance of the facility, as government shoulders significant responsibilities.

“Health is wealth, and we pray Almighty Allah grants the governor the wisdom to continue leading the state,” he said.

Receiving the facility, Chief Medical Director (CMD) Dr Shehu Nuhu-Koko thanked the government for the upgrade.

“The hospital now has uninterrupted water supply and stable 24-hour electricity, which will greatly improve healthcare services and emergency response.

“We are happy to formally take over the revitalised unit for the benefit of patients and the public,” he said.

In a related development, Yakubu-Augie also handed over the renovated morgue at the Kebbi Teaching Hospital (KSTH), Kalgo, to its management.

He said the renovation followed Gov. Idris’ inspection visit, during which he noted the morgue’s poor condition.

The upgrade was also necessary to meet standards for ongoing medical and health courses at Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero.

“We visited the facility with the governor and he was dissatisfied with its condition.

“The university’s medical programmes made it imperative to upgrade the hospital to required standards,” he said.

The commissioner commended the governor for prioritising public welfare and repositioning healthcare institutions, describing hospital infrastructure development as capital-intensive.

He urged the management to ensure effective use of the renovated morgue.

Yakubu-Augie disclosed that the morgue now had six compartments for corpses and “is powered by both the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) and a solar energy system”.
