Kwara initiates livestock industrial hub to attract investors–Commissioner

The Kwara Government initiates plans to developed a modern livestock processing and industrial hub designed to attract local and international investors into the state’s agricultural economy.

The State Commissioner for Livestock Development, Mrs Oloruntoyosi Thomas, stated this during the 2026 Press Week of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council.

Thomas said the proposed Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone (SAPZ), would serve as a fully integrated livestock industrial city equipped with critical infrastructure to support processing, storage, exports and commercial production.

According to her, the facility will include road networks, power supply systems, water treatment plants, cold storage facilities, cargo terminals, truck parks, abattoirs, veterinary clinics, warehouses and residential accommodation.

Other planned facilities include artificial insemination centres, livestock quarantine zones, health centres, fire stations and pasture development areas.

She explained that the initiative was part of the state government’s broader strategy to industrialise livestock production and create an enabling environment for agribusinesses to thrive.

“We are building an agric hub that will provide investors, processors and businesses with the environment to conduct business and grow sustainably,” she said.

Thomas, who disclosed that Nigeria imported sausages worth about $10.1 million in 2023, said that capturing just 10 per cent of the market would inject about $1 million into Kwara’s economy.

The commissioner stressed that the livestock sector offers enormous opportunities for investment, employment generation and foreign exchange earnings if properly harnessed.
