WTT Contender Lagos: Agunbiade keeps Nigeria’s hope alive
Nigeria’s Sultan Agunbiade has defeated compatriot Mathew Fabunmi 3-1 in the Men’s Singles first round at the 2026 WTT Contender Lagos.
Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the encounter took place at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall inside the Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Agunbiade’s victory ensured he remained the only Nigerian player still competing in the men’s singles category at the international tournament.
The youngster, who advanced from the qualifying rounds, produced another confident display against Fabunmi to continue his remarkable campaign in Lagos.

Agunbiade had earlier excited home supporters on Wednesday after defeating wildcard entrant Afeez Yunus 3-1 to secure qualification into the main draw.
His impressive performances are expected to improve his international ranking points following consecutive victories against fellow Nigerians.
Other Nigerian players failed to progress after difficult encounters against experienced opponents from Europe and Asia.
Among those eliminated were Olajide Omotayo, Taiwo Matti, Muiz Adegoke and Azeez Solanke.
Meanwhile, defending champion, Anders Lind, recovered from two sets down to beat France’s Iulian Chirita 3-2.
Lind admitted his opening match proved challenging in spite of eventually securing victory after a spirited comeback.
“The first match in any tournament is always the most difficult. I didn’t feel the game in the first two sets, but I fought back to win,” he said.
The Danish star also praised Lagos fans for their enthusiastic support throughout matches at the competition.
“The fans here are very important because of their enormous support in every match. That energy is very motivating for us,” Lind added.
The tournament continues with more matches as players battle for honours, ranking points and the 100,000-dollar prize purse in Lagos.
