TETFund Expands 2026 National Research Fair to Drive Innovation and Commercial Success

By Hannatu Lot

In a major push to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial markets, the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund). Arc. Sonny Echono has announced a significant expansion for its upcoming 2026 National Research Fair and Exhibition.

The initiative aims to transform dormant academic research and prototypes into viable consumer products, driving job creation and bolstering Nigeria’s local manufacturing sector.

Speaking at the inauguration of the newly expanded organizing committee in Abuja, TETFund Executive Secretary Arc. Sonny Echono revealed that the decision to scale up the event stems directly from the success of the maiden edition held in November 2024. That initial fair successfully linked institutional researchers with key industry players, proving that a structured marketplace for Nigerian innovation was highly viable.

A Broader Coalition for Innovation

To ensure the 2026 fair has a deeper economic impact, TETFund has intentionally diversified the organizing committee. Moving beyond strictly academic circles, the newly reconstituted panel now includes representatives from:

 * The organized private sector and commercial innovation hubs.

 * Relevant federal ministries and the Nigerian military.

 * The Association of Nigerian Inventors alongside independent community creators.

“The goal is to source, collate, and showcase proven research outputs and technologies,” Echono stated, emphasizing the need for strategic partnerships among researchers, investors, and entrepreneurs.

“Any Nigerian who has developed a product, service, or invention is encouraged to participate. We will advertise for entries across the board.”

Beyond the exhibition floor, Echono tasked the committee with building a comprehensive national database of research outputs from universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and research institutes.

The 2026 event will also incorporate an international conference designed to draw global investors and innovation experts to Abuja.

Unlocking Nigeria’s Hidden Potential

Echono expressed firm optimism about the country’s economic trajectory, noting that Nigeria possesses an abundance of intellectual wealth that remains largely untapped.

“Nigeria has abundant intellectual resources capable of driving economic growth if properly harnessed through research, technology, and innovation,” he noted.

He also challenged past participants to return to the 2026 fair with refined, market-ready iterations of their previous prototypes.

Earlier in the proceedings, Dr. Suleiman Zwingina, TETFund’s Director of Research and Development and Centres of Excellence, noted that years of funding have yielded a vast repository of promising technologies and prototypes.

The primary bottleneck, Zwingina acknowledged, has been commercialization—a hurdle this expanded fair is explicitly designed to clear.

Accepting the mandate, the newly appointed Committee Chairman, Dr. Umar Bindir, praised TETFund’s leadership for breaking down institutional silos by involving industry leaders and policymakers from day one.

Bindir pledged the committee’s full commitment to creating a seamless pipeline that successfully moves Nigerian brilliance from the laboratory to the commercial market.
