CHILDREN’S PARLIAMENTS INAUGURATED IN KAURA NAMODA AND TALATA MAFARA LGAS OF ZAMFARA STATE 


The Kaura-Namoda and Talata-Mafara Local Government Councils of Zamfara State in collaboration with the state Ministry for Women and Children Affairs and Save the Children International (SCI) an NGO  have inaugurated Children’s Parliaments in the two LGAs.

The inauguration events held in the two LGAs organised through a Global Affairs Canada (GAC) funded project “Reaching and Empowering Empowering Adolescents to make inform Choice for their Health and Empowering Adolescents to make inform Choice for their Health (REACH)”.

Out of the 22 members of the parliament inaugurated in Kaura-Namoda, the principal officers inaugurated were Amina Mukhtar as Speaker, Nana Aisha Mansur, Deputy Speaker, Khadija Mansur Majority Leader, Umar Kabiru Majority Whip while Okoh Cristian was inaugurated as Clerk of the parliament.

In Talata Mafara also the parliament comprised 22 members with Abubakar Muhammad Awwal as Speaker,  Zainab Abdurrashid Deputy Speaker, Queen Esther Ocheache Majority Leader, Muhammad Abdullahi Minority Leader, Al’amin Umar Na’abu Chief Whip while Ahmad Shehu to serve as Clerk of the house.

Immediately after the inauguration the mock sitting were conducted at the two separate events by the parliaments where all members took their oath of allegiance and oath of office.

In their separate remarks, the Speakers of the two parliament in Kaura Namoda and Talata Mafara LGAs, Amina Mukhtar and Abubakar Muhammad Awwal respectively assured commitments to ensure the objective of the parliaments is achieved. 

Amina Mukhtar, Speaker of Kaura Namoda promised to work hard and ensure transparency, accountability and good governance while leading the parliament of Kaura-Namoda LGA.

Abubakar Muhammad Awwal, Talata Mafara parliament’s Speaker, said the mandate given to “us will not go in vain, as a Speaker and head of this parliament, I will not relent efforts to ensure that the assembly bring changes that will transform the lives of children in Talata Mafara and beyond”.

The facilitator of the children’s parliament in the state, Alhaji Yusuf Sabo said the parliament was a pilot  projects initiated in the Kaura-Namoda and Talata-Mafara LGAs sponsored by REACH projects.

Sabo who is the Director Legislative Matters of Zamfara state house of assembly said that the principal officers of the parliament were elected through open ballot system and  they are to serve for a period of one year. 

According to him, members of the parliament are to be deliberating on 30 issues affecting lives of children and young persons so that to be presented to appropriate authorities for action.
