AY Makun decries social media culture of ‘instant judgment’

Ace comedian and filmmaker AY Makun has condemned  the culture of instant judgment on social media, saying netizens often  rush  to  judgment based on one-sided narratives.

In a post shared on his verified X account, Makun described social media as a “court of injustice” where the initial narrative often shapes public opinion before the facts are fully established.

He said social media users often favoured the first account presented, leading to immediate judgments before other sides of a story were heard.

He wrote: “The social media court of injustice has always favoured the first-served narrative, often rushing to immediate judgment before the other side is even heard.”

The comedian said he looked forward to a time when social media would recognise that there were usually two sides to every story.

“I look forward to the day when social media fully embraces one simple truth: there are always two sides to every story,” Makun said.

He, however, observed that some recent trends online suggested that social media users were gradually becoming more open to considering different perspectives.

Makun’s comments come amid growing public debates on social media, where allegations, personal disputes and other controversies often attract widespread reactions before all parties present their accounts.

He urged social media users to exercise restraint and allow all sides to be heard before forming conclusions on issues circulating online.
