NEDC Sensitizes Stakeholders On Electric Vehicle Deployment In Yobe

The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has convened a major stakeholders’ engagement and sensitization workshop in Damaturu, Yobe State, marking a significant step toward the rollout of its Electric Mobility Renewed Hope Initiative.

The initiative aims to introduce 10,000 electric tricycles, 300 electric taxis, and 30 electric buses across the North East region. The workshop, held at the NEDC Multipurpose Hall, Government Girls Unity College, was themed “Embracing Electric Mobility for a Cleaner, Smarter and Prosperous Future.”

During the event, stakeholders discussed the economic and environmental potential of electric vehicles (EVs), highlighting their role in fostering innovation, creating jobs, and curbing carbon emissions associated with traditional transport methods.

NEDC Yobe State Coordinator, Professor Ali Abbas, opened the session by calling for active cooperation from the transportation sector, energy operators, and various government agencies. “We urge all stakeholders to embrace this initiative and take ownership of the transition toward cleaner mobility,” he stated.

Representatives from the National Orientation Agency (NOA) lauded the NEDC for the intervention, noting that the deployment is a timely response to the current challenges of rising transportation costs. Hajiya Maryam Usman Shettima, represented by the NOA’s Media and Public Relations Officer, Sabiu Sule Maikwano, emphasized the need for responsible maintenance of the vehicles once distributed and pledged the agency’s support in mobilizing public awareness.

The workshop brought together a diverse group of participants, including commissioners for Transport and Energy, women’s affairs advocates, and representatives from security agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, and the Federal Road Safety Corps. Leaders from key transport unions—including NATA, NURTW, RTEAN, NARTO, and various tricycle riders’ associations—were also in attendance to finalize the collaborative framework for the project’s implementation.

As the region prepares for the arrival of these vehicles, the engagement served as a platform to align expectations and ensure that the transition to electric mobility contributes effectively to sustainable development and environmental protection in Yobe State.
