A Father’s Love: The Experience of Joy and Pain of Fatherhood
By Umar Ardo, Ph.D
In the journey of fatherhood, there are moments of pure joy and deep sorrow that shape a man’s heart in ways I never imagined before the death of A’isha, my daughter. One of the greatest joys a father can experience is the bond he shares with his daughter. The love between a father and daughter, particularly his first daughter, is a special kind of magic that knows no bounds. It is a love that is unconditional, pure and everlasting.
From the moment she is born, a daughter captures her father’s heart with her first cry, her innocence, her laughter, and as she grows her endless curiosity about the world. As he watches her grow, he learns from her, and is amazed by her strength and resilience. Their relationship is built on trust, respect, and a deep connection that transcends words.
As the years pass, the father-daughter bond only grows stronger. They share moments of laughter, tears, triumphs and challenges. The father becomes not just a parent, but a friend, a confidant, a mentor and a guiding light in his daughter’s life. He is her rock, her protector and her biggest cheerleader. When it’s time for her to marry, he hesitates and becomes reluctant in giving her out to a stranger.
However, life is unpredictable, and sometimes, tragedy strikes. The pain of losing a daughter is a father’s worst nightmare. The grief is overwhelming, the loss unbearable. The emptiness left behind is a void that can never be filled. The memories of their time together, the sound of her laughter, the touch of her hand – they all become bittersweet reminders of what once was.

In the midst of this pain, a father holds on to the love he shared with his daughter. He remembers her smile, her warmth and the light she brought into his life. He finds solace in knowing that their bond will never truly be broken, that she will always be a part of him, guiding him, as if she’s watching over him from the Greatbeyond.
In the end, a father’s love for his daughter is a love that transcends time and space. It is a love that endures, even in the face of loss and grief. It is a love that gives him strength, courage and hope to carry on, knowing that their bond will never truly be broken.
As a father navigates the joys and pains of fatherhood, one thing remains constant – his love for his daughter, beautiful and wonderful, forever etched in his heart.
So it is with me since I lost my beloved beautiful, wonderful and irreplaceable daughter, A’isha, my mother’s namesake. As a faithful Muslim, I know Allah gives and Allah takes, and whatever He does is the best. In this is every faithful father’s consolation in the joy and pain of having and losing a daughter.
