ABSU VC counsels new doctors to take  services to hospitals

Prof.  Ndukwe Okeudo,  the Vice-Chancellor of Abia State University (ABSU) has counselled its new doctors to take their cutting edge training on service alleviation to hospitals.

Okeudo gave the counsel at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Aba on Thursday during the induction ceremony of 140 Medical Doctors trained at its College of Medicine and Health Sciences.

The Induction and Swearing-in Ceremony was held for the 31st Batch of Medical graduates of ABSU, Uturu, at ABSUTH’s premises, Aba.

“This moment marks the culmination of years of rigorous training, relentless dedication, and unwavering commitment to the noble profession of medicine.

“Today, we celebrate not just academic achievements but the transformation of young scholars into competent, compassionate, and ethical medical practitioners”, he said.

The VC noted that their journey had been long but rejoices that they have persevered, emerging ready to serve humanity with the skills and knowledge they have acquired.

“I urge you to remember the privileges you have earned and the ethical responsibilities that accompany them.

“Your role extends beyond curing diseases; it involves listening, educating, and inspiring hope.

“Commit yourselves to lifelong learning, compassionate care, and respect for the dignity of every patient”, he said.

He thanked instructors, parents, mentors and all other contributors to the successes of the doctors for their sacrifices.

The Vice-Chancellor was represented by Prof Joshua Ogbonna, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, ABSU.

The Provost, ABSU College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Prof Chucks Kamanu in his speech lauded the courage of this batch of doctors who he said stayed about three extra years for no fault of theirs

Kamanu also thanked the VC for granting the permission and facilitating the hosting of the first major induction event at the College ground in Aba.

He thanked God for the election of Otti as governor who he said helped the institution scale through many hurdles which enabled the graduation of this cohort of doctors today.

He said when the governor intervened in the college, its re-accreditation was fully restored and its admissions quota increased from 120 to 150 students.

Kamanu said since Otti’s arrival in 2023,  ABSUTH had seen uninterrupted services with patients visiting leading to its student doctors acquiring rich clinical experiences.

He said the governor had installed a A500KV electricity transformer and is drilling a Solar powered borehole with tank stands installed in Students’ hostels for their comfort.

“Resist the temptation of dishonest short cuts to success in life but be ready to go the extra mile for the safety and welfare of your patients.

“Your lecturers have impacted knowledge and skills to you that will help you succeed in life but remember that to excel, you must be connected to the source of wisdom – your God”, he counseled.

He called for more classroom spaces in Uturu and Aba and a befitting college auditorium in Aba campus stressing that the ceremony which held under rain in an open space had made need urgent.

The Chief Medical Director, (CMD) Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), Prof Ijeoma Nduka said the induction which was the first in ABSUTH premises in Aba is a significant milestone.

She said today’s induction ceremony was possible because Gov Alex Otti who  tackled the obstacles leading to ABSUTH’s loss of re-accreditation on assumption of office.

She said Otti further provided for

the re-accreditation of Housemanship and Post-graduate trainings at the Teaching Hospital in Aba.

She said the governor also provided for the renovation of House Officers’ quarters and planned the building of an auditorium in the Teaching Hospital for a growing students population.

Nduka said Otti was putting up a new mega-structure at ABSUTH which would  accommodate over five (5) complexes at the Teaching Hospital.

She said the governor had planned the building of “a simulation laboratory” for ease of learning in tandem with global standards for medical education.

Nduka thanked him for restoring steady power supply and employing medical personnel to boost services at the Teaching Hospital among others things.

She said Otti had created an enabling environment for sound healthcare delivery in ABSUTH and urged the new inductees to take advantage of the development to do Housemanship there.
