ABU matriculates 3,587 new post graduate student for the 2023-2024 academic session

In a vibrant ceremony that echoed with promise and academic zeal, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest and most esteemed institutions, formally welcomed 3,587 new postgraduate students for the 2023/2024 academic session. the School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) auditorium in Samaru Campus, the matriculation marked a significant milestone for these scholars.

Addressing the gathering at the auditorium, Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Prof. Mohammed Nasir Shua’abu, set an inspirational tone. “Matriculation and oath-taking signify your formal induction into ABU, requiring diligence and a quest for knowledge,” he stated, urging students to embody the university’s values. Prof. Shua’abu emphasized the newly approved regulations aimed at ensuring timely completion of postgraduate programs and enhancing research quality, aligning with national development goals.

During the ceremony, it was revealed that out of 5,812 admitted students, 3,587 had completed their registration. In an exclusive interview with Neptune prime, Prof. Shua’abu discussed the revised registration charges, noting a 25-30% increase for postgraduate programs, a stark contrast to the 180-200% hike for undergraduates.

He explained the discontinuation of flexible payment options due to financial abuses, which had pushed the university into a negative balance.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kabiru Bala took the podium, reinforcing the importance of adhering to university rules and avoiding social vices such as drug abuse and cultism. He assured students of the university’s dedication to their academic and personal success.

Secretary of the Postgraduate School, Mrs. Ramatu Mohammed, urged students to take advantage of scholarships from the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), MTN Nigeria, and other sources. She highlighted the school’s involvement in family dispute resolution and anti-drug abuse initiatives.

Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Fatihu Mohammed Yakasai, reassured students of their well-being and special accommodations for the physically challenged, advocating for peace and harmony within the university.

Director of University Health Services, Prof. M.S. Isah, outlined comprehensive healthcare services available to registered students and staff, emphasizing the affordability of registering family members under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Director ICT, Mallam Shu’aibu Muhammad Umar, ensured the new students of State-of-the-art facilities and resources available at the Iya Abubakar ICT institute of the university and encourage them to apply for the free internet (WiFi) available all through the campus plus institutional mail at the centre, to access online resources, learning platforms enabling them in their research and learning.

Acting University Librarian, Alhaji Abdulhamid Liman Gambo, celebrated the university’s extensive library resources, including over 100 libraries, millions of e-books and e-journals, and advanced ICT facilities.

Security was also a key focus, with Chief Security Officer Mallam Ashiru T. Zango’s representative emphasizing vigilance and responsible social media use to safeguard the ABU community.

In a heartfelt address, President of the Postgraduate Representative Council (PRC), Comrade Ahmad Dauda, praised the university’s learning environment and assured new students of support in their academic journey, warning that success requires hard work.

A representative of the matriculating students dispelled rumors about graduation difficulties at ABU, stressing that degrees are earned through dedication and effort.

The ceremony concluded with Registrar Malam Rabi’u Sama’ila administering the matriculation oath, and Associate Professor Dalhat Idris delivering a closing vote of thanks, sealing the students’ commitment to their new academic paths.

The day’s events resonated with the promise of intellectual growth and the forging of new academic frontiers, as ABU Zaria continues to stand “Naturally ahead.”
