Adamawa Flood: Six Killed, Over 10,000 Displaced By Heavy Downpour

No fewer than six people have lost their lives while over ten thousand others in twelve communities were displaced following heavy downpour that lasted for several hours in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State.

Report from the Area revealed that the flood also affected 1,711 households who are now living in 8 camps set up by the authorities, while houses, shops, boreholes, and many valuables were completely destroyed in the affected areas and 1000 hectares of land submerged while bridges that connects Borno and Adamawa states were not spared.

Disclosing this to newsmen during an on the spot assessment in the affected communities, the Head of Operations National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Yola office, Ayuba Ladan said more than ten people sustained injuries as a result of the flood that ravaged the communities.

According to Ajuba Ladan, communities worst hit by the flood includes Kirchinga, Duhu, Maiwandu ,Jahili, Kokohu, Lumadu, Zhau, Palam, Kwambula, Shuware, and Shuwa, adding that the Local Government Council in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross has established eight IDPs camps to cater for the victims.

Meanwhile, Adamawa State Deputy Governor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta has called on the Federal Government to assist the State in mitigating the sufferings of the flood victims in Madagali Local Government Area of the State.

Farauta revealed that, already the state government through the office of State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) had already approved relief materials to the victims.

Farauta, while commiserating with flood victims on Saturday in Madagali expressed dismay over the colossal destructions of houses and farmlands, urging families of those who lost their loved ones to take solace in God.

According to the Deputy Governor, “The colossal damage is too much as more communities are affected by the flood” and appealed to the Federal Government and humanitarian donors to come to the aid of the victims, promising that government would look in the plight of the victims with a view to bringing more succour.

Earlier, the District Head of Duhu, Mustafa Mohammad the Council chairman Mr Simon Musa Shashi also appealed to federal and state governments to come to the aid of the victims as fear of outbreak of a disease.
