Adamawa Senator Launches Tree Planting Campaign in Mayo-Belwa

242

Senator Bonos Dauda Yaroe, representing Adamawa Southern Senatorial District, has initiated a tree planting campaign in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area to promote afforestation in the community. This campaign aims to combat climate change, which is significantly driven by human activities such as deforestation, emission of harmful gases, and improper waste disposal.

The launch event took place at the permanent site of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria (LCCN) Mayo-Belwa Diocese Secretariat. Senator Yaroe emphasized the urgency of tree planting to mitigate the effects of climate change, advocating for aggressive afforestation efforts to address this global challenge.

“Tree planting has become a necessity to save the earth from the fury of climate change,” said Senator Yaroe. He stressed that initiatives like this are crucial for addressing desertification and encouraged the community to adopt tree planting practices to enhance their environment. He cited examples from Israel and the United Arab Emirates, where extensive tree-planting efforts have successfully transformed desert areas into lush green landscapes.

Senator Yaroe praised the Iliya Yame Kwache Foundation for its role in facilitating the tree planting campaign across the 21 local government areas in Adamawa State. The foundation has a history of conducting tree planting exercises, including past initiatives in Michika Local Government and recent efforts in Demsa and Mayo-Belwa LGAs.

“Today, Mother Earth faces many existential challenges. Climate change, largely man-made, threatens the survival of many regions. We build factories and operate equipment that emits large volumes of carbon into the atmosphere, cut down trees without replanting, and pollute the environment with plastics and chemicals like herbicides, which poison plants and water sources,” Yaroe stated. “We need to proactively address these environmental issues for the sake of our communities and mankind.”

The tree planting campaign is a proactive measure to tackle environmental degradation and promote sustainable practices in Adamawa State, contributing to the global effort to combat climate change and protect the planet for future generations.
