Afghanistan crisis to top agenda for Maas, Blinken at airbase talks
Top diplomats from the United States and Germany, Antony Blinken and Heiko Maas, are set to discuss the situation in Afghanistan on Wednesday at the U.S. Ramstein airbase in western Germany.
The talks are also set to include, via videolink, several other foreign ministers whose countries are dealing with the aftermath of the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan last month.
The U.S. and Germany were the two largest troop contributors to the international military mission in Afghanistan, which ended early last week with the withdrawal of the last U.S. soldiers.

Many countries, including the U.S. and Germany, are still trying to get many people out of the country who feel threatened by the Taliban.
The militant Islamists have taken power throughout the country and announced a new cabinet on Tuesday.
The U.S. is using Ramstein in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate as one of several hubs for its evacuation mission.
According to the German Interior Ministry, 34,103 people had arrived there from Afghanistan by early on Monday.
Some 20,943 people had been flown out to the U.S. and 90 had applied for asylum in Germany.
