Akawe Torkula Polytechnic: Bridging the Skills Gap for Economic Growth

Akawe Torkula Polytechnic, Makurdi has prioritize development of skilled professionals and technicians along paper qualifications to the growth of state and national economy.

Rector of the Polytechnic Doctor Martins Agena affirmed this recently when he paid official visit to the Executive Secretary, National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, Professor Idris Bugaje in Abuja.

Doctor Agena who was accompanied by Director, Academic Planning and Quality Assurance Doctor Terna Nyietagher said to achieve the objectives, the institution has developed short term courses with the primary of providing skills in various fields of human endeavor without age, paper or language barriers from learners adding that the Polytechnic has signed Memorandums of Understanding with several organizations to train and retrain workforce in diverse skills.

He assured of the present administration’s commitment towards uplifting technical education in the state to accelerate development explaining that the visit was to request f

or the accreditation of many courses for the institution as soon as possible in line with the vision of Governor Hyacinth Alia for transforming the institution into a hub of technology and innovations.

Responding, Executive Secretary of NBTE, Professor Bugaje said Polytechnics were saddled with the responsibility of driving Nigeria’s economy through technology as such, they must prioritize skills training via establishment of skills development centers where learners would choose at least one skill before qualifying for the award of a National and Higher National Diplomas.

Professor Bugaje assured Doctor Agena of the NBTE’s readiness to approve accreditation to as many technical courses at the Akawe Torkula Polytechnic once the required guidelines were met and expressed appreciation to the Rector for the visit.
