Appeal for Clemency in Sunday Jackson Case

The Gongola Peoples Forum (GPF), representing the ethnic nationalities of Gongola origin in Adamawa State, is appealing to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for clemency in the case of Sunday Jackson, who has been sentenced to death.

The case stems from an incident on Mr. Jackson’s farm. According to reports, a Fulani herder allowed his cattle to graze on Mr. Jackson’s crops. When Mr. Jackson confronted the herder, he was allegedly attacked with a knife and sustained injuries. Mr. Jackson then overpowered the herder and fatally wounded him.

Mr. Jackson was arrested and subsequently convicted of homicide in a Yola lower court. The court determined that, after subduing his attacker, Mr. Jackson should have retreated rather than inflicting fatal injuries. This verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The GPF, after reviewing the case with its legal team, expresses concern about the application of the law in this instance. They are now appealing to Governor Fintiri, citing his reputation for compassion and respect for human life, to grant a state pardon to Sunday Jackson. The GPF emphasizes its belief in the sanctity of life and expresses confidence in Governor Fintiri’s ability to exercise mercy and justice.
