ASUU Rejects New University Governing Council List, Ready For Strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the newly constituted governing councils for federal universities in Nigeria, expressing disappointment and frustration over the appointment process.

According to ASUU’s national president, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, the list is dominated by retired politicians rather than experts in academia or relevant fields.

In an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, Prof Osodeke questioned the suitability of such appointments, stating, “Most of them are retired politicians.

They are honourable this and honourable that.

“He criticized the list as being worse than its predecessor, indicating a regression in appointment policies.

ASUU also raised concerns over the council formation’s procedural flaws and possible illegality.

The Federal Government dissolved the previous councils over ten months ago, contrary to the University Act stipulating that members should complete their terms.

The union emphasized that university education should not be subject to partisan politics, urging a reevaluation of how university councils are constituted.

“We can’t run our universities like this if we truly want genuine development to occur,” Prof Osodeke stated.

With the rejection of the new council list, ASUU is ready to embark on a strike, citing the need for a comprehensive overhaul of the university governance system.

The union demands a more inclusive and expert-based approach to ensure the strategic development of higher education institutions in Nigeria.
