Barrister Shettima Recommends Profilers For Recruitment In Nigeria
BY ANKELI EMMANUEL, Sokoto
Sokoto State Coordinator of Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, Barrister Akilahyel Shettima has decried that, absence of profilers to vet those being recruited is largely responsible for the recruitment of people with criminal mindsets or records into any of the security agencies in Nigeria.
Shettima who spoke on Wednesday at Dankeni Guest Palace hotels, Sokoto on the second day of Training the Trainers workshop on, “The Implementation Of Criminal Justice Legislations” added that, allowing bad eggs into any system often corrupt it.
The 2 day workshop organized by CLEEN Foundation with support from MacArthur Foundation is part of it’s 2 years implimentaion of, “Enhancing The Accountability Of Justice Sector Actors In The Mitigation Of Corruption In Nigeria through Criminal Justice Legislation for Law Enforcement Officers.

Continuing, Barrister Shetima stressed that, without proper profiling, a known criminal from one geopolitical zone will migrate to the other and get recruited into the service.
“And by the time this happens, such a recruit becomes a challenge for the integrity of the agency. He or she will manifest the hidden character even while in the service and by doing so, corrupt other innocent colleagues. Thereby creating bad reputation for the entire system”.
“Though, profiling prospective recruits (applicants) either in the security agencies or otherwise, might seems Herculean, however, doing so is a right step in the right direction. And a needed sacrifice we will do to get the system working devoid of people with questionable characters.

“We should properly profile people. Store their records (data) and allow for revisiting same of unhindered access to such information by any recruiting agency or organization”. Barrister Shettima recommended.
Speaking earlier, CLEEN Foundation Director of Programmes, Mr Salaudeen Hashim observed that having a justice system that works for all is sacrosanct to having a society that thrives in prosperity.
According to Salaudeen, “If we deal with injustice, insecurity will reduce by half in this country”.
