The Bauchi State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has confirmed its participation in the nationwide strike set to begin on Monday. This decision aligns with the directive from both the national NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Acting Chairman of the NLC Bauchi Chapter, Mr. Ibrahim Maikudi, made this announcement following a meeting held on Saturday in Bauchi. Maikudi explained that the national bodies of NLC and TUC decided to declare the indefinite strike due to the Federal Government’s failure to enact a new National Minimum Wage Act and to revert the increased electricity tariff back to N65/kWh.
In response to these unmet demands, Maikudi called for an emergency state meeting to ensure proper decision-making and compliance with the national directive. “We will join the strike,” he asserted. “By Sunday midnight, we will begin mobilization and join others. We will ensure effective communication with them before Monday.”
Maikudi emphasized that the offices would remain closed over the weekend, ensuring that their actions remain within the legal framework. “The arrangement was sudden, but we will follow due process and serve the necessary notices,” he said.
He further stressed the chapter’s unwavering commitment to the strike, highlighting the importance of pressing for their demands and those of the citizens. The Bauchi NLC is determined to stand in solidarity with the national effort, advocating for fair wages and affordable electricity tariffs for all.
As Monday approaches, the Bauchi State NLC is preparing to join forces with other states across the country in a unified stance against the Federal Government’s policies. The strike signifies a crucial moment for labor unions as they seek to improve the working and living conditions of Nigerian citizens.
