Bauchi state chosen for maternal, neonatal mortality initiative in 11 LGAs

The Federal Ministry for Health and Social Welfare (FMOHSW) has selected 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Bauchi State for the implementation of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII).

This initiative aims to address key issues contributing to maternal and neonatal mortality.

Dr Sani Dambam, Commissioner for Health in Bauchi State, expressed the state’s readiness to engage in the project, which he described as a significant step towards safe motherhood.

At a workshop held in Bauchi on Monday, Dambam emphasised the state’s gratitude for being selected to participate in the initiative, noting that it aligned with the current administration’s commitment to improve healthcare services.

“The focus of the project will be on reducing maternal and neonatal deaths, which have been a longstanding issue in the health sector.”

Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, the Executive Chairman of the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Board, also highlighted the importance of such initiatives.

He acknowledged the efforts of the FMOHSW and reaffirmed the board’s commitment to support the project.

Mohammed also raised concerns about delays in accessing care for pregnant women, which could lead to serious complications during pregnancy and childbirth.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the MAMII project specifically aims to tackle the five delays identified by FMOHSW, which contribute to high maternal and neonatal mortality rates.

These delays include: delay in seeking care, delay in reaching care, and delay in receiving care, delay in taking care and delay in coordination.

The selected LGAs for the project include Dambam, Dass, Darazo, Gamawa, Katagum, Shira, Jama’are, Itas Gadau, Kirfi, Ganjuwa, and Misau.

This initiative represents a vital step in improving healthcare for mothers and newborns in the region.
