BREAKING: Gunmen attack Yobe NUJ secretariat

Unidentified gunmen launched an attack on the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital in the early hours of today 19 September 2025 injured a police officer on duty.
The incident occurred around 2:00 am when the assailants opened fire, hitting the officer. He is currently receiving treatment at the emergency unit of the Police Hospital in Damaturu.
Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalist NUJ Yobe State Council, Comrade Rajab Ismail Mohammed described the attack as disturbing and a serious threat to the safety of journalists in the state. He called on security agencies to urgently investigate the incident and bring the culprits to justice.

The NUJ Chairman further appealed to authorities to enhance the security of media professionals and press facilities across the state, stressing that such attacks could hinder press freedom and public access to information.
While details of the motive remain unclear, leadership of the council called for thorough investigations to uncover those responsible. The union emphasized that protecting journalists is essential to the growth of democracy and public accountability.
