Buni tasks security, stakeholders to scale up anti drug campaign

Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe has charged security agencies and other stakeholders to intensify campaign against drug abuse.

Buni said this on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Ethical Re-orientation Campaign tagged: “Operation Gyaran Hali,” being implemented by the state Ministry of Religious Affairs and Ethical Re-Orientation.

Buni decried the spate of substance abuse, especially among the youths, saying that, “the increasing consumption of illicit substances, especially drugs is quite worrisome and calls for immediate and strategic action to stem the growing tide, to save our communities, state and the country.”

Buni urged stakeholders including community and religious leaders, parents and guardians, to join hands with security agencies in the fight against drug abuse.

“Most crimes are tied to drug consumption, therefore, parents should expose their wards engaged in drug related activities rather than shield them for us to have a sane and productive youths and future,” he said.

The governor also directed traditional institutions to intensify sensitisation activities to create awareness on the dangers of drug abuse.

“Let me also call on the security chiefs to do a thorough in-house cleaning to ensure that, while your men are actively engage in the new war against drugs, the programme is not sabotaged by some few suspicious characters,” he said.

While pledging support to the campaign, Buni charged security agencies to arrest anyone involved in the trafficking, trading and consumption of illicit substances.
