CAF Penalizes Senegalese Forward for Criticizing AFCON Exit
Krépin Diatta, a key player for the Senegalese national team, has been penalized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following his outspoken criticism of the organization in the wake of Senegal’s premature elimination from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
After Senegal’s disappointing exit in the round of 16 at AFCON 2023, where they were defeated by Ivory Coast, Diatta publicly accused CAF of bias and corruption, sparking controversy and drawing attention to his remarks.
Subsequently, Diatta faced the CAF disciplinary committee, where he was unable to substantiate his allegations with evidence. As a result, he has been fined USD $16,329.88 and handed a four-game suspension, with two games suspended. This renders him ineligible for the next two official matches and requires him to exercise caution in two additional games over the following year.
Additionally, both Diatta and the Senegalese Football Federation have been fined 10 million FCFA, a significant blow that will impact the team’s upcoming fixtures under coach Aliou.
