CLEEN Foundation wants effective criminal justice law implementation in Plateau

The CLEEN Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation, has called for an effective implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) in Plateau.

The Acting Executive Director of CLEEN, Mr Peter Maduoma, said this on Monday at a 2- day capacity training for police, law enforcement and judicial stakeholders on the administration of criminal justice law in Plateau.

Maduoma was represented at the event by the CLEEN Director of Programmes, Dr Salaudeen Hashim.

He said that the training was to equip stakeholders with practical tools to operationalise  the application of ACJL, bridge knowledge gaps as regards ACJL, and deepen technical understanding.

He said it was also to strengthen collaboration with other stakeholders.

“The workshop is part of activities under a project titled ‘Strengthening Right-based Approach to ACJA frameworks.

“It is aimed at advancing women, peace and security in Nigeria, and funded by the Norwegian Embassy,” he said.

Maduoma said the training would also build inter-agency frameworks for consistent and rights-compliant application of the law.

He said it would develop actionable strategies to addressing systemic challenges such as trial delays, custodial congestion, and rights violations.

He added that the foundation would leverage on its experience in security and judicial sector reforms over the years to deliver on the project.

“We are confident that working with the stakeholders in the ACJL in Nigeria to assess our journey so far in its 10 years of implementation, will help identify gaps and close the gaps,” he said.

The CLEEN director said that at the end of the workshop, participants would develop actionable strategies to address the challenges in the implementation of ACJL in Plateau.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the states involved in the implementation are Enugu, Imo, Lagos, Ekiti, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, Kaduna, Jigawa, Adamawa, Cross-River and Akwa Ibom.

One of the participants,  Ms Naankus Fyaktu, Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Plateau branch, commended CLEEN foundation for the capacity training.

She said the training was an opportunity to learn current trends and challenges confronting ACJL.

Fyaktu expressed optimism that the participants would leave with a better understanding of ACJL at the end of the training.

Other stakeholders at the workshop were representatives of the Plateau Police Command, Operation Rainbow, the Plateau State Ministry of Justice and the Nigeria Correctional Service.
