Climate Change: The National Agency for the Great Green Wall raises alarm against desert encroachment in northern states.

As part of concerted efforts by the national agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) to mitigate the impact of climate change and desert encroachment, the agency flagged off the Economic Trees Planting Campaign.
The tree planting campaign is part of the agency’s 10th anniversary to curb the consequences of drought and desertification in the eleven northern states of the country targeting millions of date palm trees.
The Director General of the Agency, Mr Sale Abubakar, disclosed this while flagging off a tree planting campaign at Mai Malari community in Yusufari local government area of Yobe state.

The Director General explained that the decision to flag off this year’s campaign in the Mai Malari community, which was adversely affected by the effects of desert encroachment, was to encourage the community to embrace the culture of tree planting.
Mr Sale Abubakar stressed the need for stakeholders to continue sensitisation to mitigate the impact of climate change through tree planting for greener environments.
Earlier, Yobe state commissioner Ministry of Environment, Alhaji Sidi Yakubu Karasuwa, noted the state government’s holistic approach towards addressing the impact of climate change.
He appreciates the unflinching commitment of the agency to address droughts and desertification challenges bedeviling the Sahel region and its consequences on the socioeconomic life and well-being of the people in Yobe

“The efforts of the agency towards restoring the country’s dry lands and ecosystem to mitigate the impact of climate change on the lives and livelihoods of the people in the region are highly commendable he added.
Alhaji Sidi Karasuwa applauded the agency for its consistent partnership with the Yobe government in restoration activities in the state.
In their separate remarks, the Emir of Bade, Alhaji Abubakar Umar Suleiman and the Emir of Yusufari, Alhaji Muhammad Ibn Zakariya, reassure their readiness to support the fight against desert encroachment.
They further restated commitments to continue advocating for tree planting in their respective domains.
