Expert raises alarm over heat stroke in Bauchi

Dr Hassan Garba, a private medical practitioner in Bauchi, has advised residents to seek shaded areas, use hand fans, and stay cool to prevent heat strokes during the hot weather.

He further recommended increasing water intake, consuming vegetables, and eating liquid-rich fruits to support kidney function in the heat.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Bauchi, Garba warned that heat stroke could be fatal if not promptly addressed.

He also cautioned against eating salty foods, sugary snacks, and caffeinated drinks, which could worsen dehydration.

Garba explained that consuming iced water during hot weather could negatively affect blood circulation and flow to the brain.

Instead, he advised drinking cold water and avoiding caffeinated drinks, as they could increase urination leading to dehydration.

He highlighted the effect of high temperatures on the body, pointing out that prolonged exposure to temperatures exceeding 40°C could lead to rapid water loss through evaporation.

According to him, this leads to dehydration, which may result in headaches, confusion, dizziness, fainting, or even loss of consciousness.

Garba urged people to sip water regularly, not just when thirsty, and consume fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and oranges, which contained high amounts of liquid to help with hydration.
