Gov. Buni flags off  77km lifeline road connecting northeast states.

 By Yusuf Bukar Biriri.

Mai Mala Buni, the governor of Yobe State, has flagged off the reconstruction of the Damaturu-Gujba-Magza Road, a 50-year-old strategic highway, undertaken by the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

Speaking at the official flag-off of the 77-kilometre road project, Buni described the road as a vital corridor connecting Yobe to Southern Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, and several Southeastern states.

Buni emphasised the strategic importance of the Damaturu–Gujba–Buni Yadi–Magza Federal Highway, noting that it serves as a vital corridor linking Yobe State to parts of southern Borno, Adamawa, Taraba and other southern regions of the country.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening infrastructure as a foundation for economic growth, agricultural development, and enhanced security across the state.

The reconstruction of the highway is expected to ease the movement of people, goods, and security personnel, while opening up more economic opportunities for residents in the benefiting communities.

He noted that while the road was initially reconstructed by the administration of former Governor Senator Ibrahim Geidam, increased traffic pressure in recent years had deteriorated its condition, necessitating urgent intervention.

Buni revealed that his administration swiftly engaged the NEDC to secure funding for the project. “Our discussions with the commission have been fruitful, and we are witnessing the outcome today,” he said, commending the NEDC for prioritising the request.

The Governor emphasised the road’s importance to security, noting that it facilitates the movement of troops in the fight against insurgency.

He described the Damaturu–Buni Yadi–Magza road as a critical infrastructure project that will significantly enhance connectivity, boost economic activities, and strengthen security operations across benefiting communities.

In his remarks, Mohammad Goni Alkali, NEDC Managing Director, commended the Buni administration for its consistent support and collaboration in the execution of developmental projects across the state.

Alkali said Governor Buni’s relentless efforts in bringing the project to life and creating an enabling environment that has facilitated the smooth implementation of NEDC interventions in Yobe State.

According to him, the Commission remains committed to working closely with the Yobe State Government to deliver impactful projects that directly improve the lives of the people.

“Governor Mai Mala Buni has given us all the support required. We are committed to completing the 77 Damaturu -Gujba-Magza road without any break.

“The road project will be executed in two phases. The Commission has already commenced work on Phase I, covering 25 kilometres, which has already been awarded and mobilised.”Alkali stated.

The NEDC boss disclosed that beyond road construction, the Commission has executed numerous projects in Yobe State, including the installation of over 6,000 solar streetlights, the construction of three mega schools across the three senatorial zones, the drilling of more than 150 boreholes, housing estate developments, and several other road projects aimed at supporting post-insurgency recovery and socio-economic growth.
