Gov Idris procures chemicals to combat rice disease in Shanga

Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has directed the Ministry of Agriculture to procure and deploy chemicals to combat a strange disease affecting rice farmlands in parts of Shanga Local Government Area.

The Governor gave the order on Thursday in the course of his ‘Thank You Visit’ to Shanga, where he expressed gratitude to the people for their support in the 2023 general elections.

“We have received reports of a strange disease or pests attacking rice farms, consequently, I instructed the Commissioner for Agriculture to assess the situation”, 

“I have since approved the immediate procurement of chemicals to fumigate the affected farms,” Idris stated.

He assured farmers that the government would intervene swiftly to mitigate the impact, particularly in Duggu, Gebbe, and Kukuni, known hubs of rice production.

In recognition of Shanga’s significance in agricultur andcommer, the Governor also pledged to consider the construction of additional roads in the area.

“Some roads are already under construction, but we will do more to improve infrastructure in this area” he said.

Governor Idris reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to development across the state. 

He emphasized that education remained free in Kebbi State, with the government paying registration, tuition, and  examination fees as well as accommodation and upkeep allowances.

“In our effort to support parents, we are fully shouldering education expenses for students”,

 “Additionally, we have increased students feeding expenditure from ₦175 million to ₦300 million”, 

“We will also continue to distribute free fertilizer and grains to farmers,” he added.

Ahead of Ramadan, the Governor announced plans to distribute truckloads of food items to the citizens and reiterated his commitment to subsidizing Hajj exercise for intending pilgrims.

In a major political development, the entire PDP executive committee of Shanga Local Government, along with over 500 members, announced their defection to the APC.

The defectors include ward chairmen, local government executives, the PDP vice chairman, youth leader, and women leader.

APC State Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kana-Zuru, welcomed the new members and assured them of equity and brotherhood within the party.

Meanwhile, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Yakubu Bala Tafida, donated a car, motorcycles to all ward chairmen, secretaries, youth, and women leaders in appreciation of their support.
