A major flood control project in Damaturu has successfully prevented the city’s annual destructive flooding this year, marking a key achievement under Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration.
This was made known by the Yobe state Project Coordinator, Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes(ACReSAL) Shehu Alhaji Mohammed who said the intervention has spared the community from recurring losses in lives, livestock, and millions of Naira.

He stated that, the project involved raising a critical culvert by one meter and widening it by three meters on each side.

“The improved channel now measures between 3.5 and 7.5 meters wide, with a 20-meter rear section designed for future farming use”,said Shehu.
He highlighted the project’s dual benefit; flood prevention and irrigation.A 3.2-kilometer canal directs water to a reservoir in Sumsumma, which is expected to supply water from June to December, enabling dry-season farming and boosting the local economy.
“The site is set to be handed over to the community by the end of March,”Shehu added.
