A landmark bill establishing the Gum Arabic Research Institute in Damaturu has successfully passed its First Reading in the Senate.
Sponsored by Distinguished Senator Musa Mustapha, the bill represents a significant step towards fostering innovation, economic growth, and youth empowerment in the state.

The Gum Arabic Research Institute (GARI) will be a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advancing research and development in all aspects of gum arabic production, processing, and application. Specific research areas will include:
Improved Gum Arabic Production Techniques: Research will focus on increasing yields, improving quality, and developing sustainable harvesting methods to benefit local farmers.
Value-Added Product Development: The institute will explore new and innovative applications for gum arabic beyond its traditional uses, creating opportunities for diversification and higher-value products.
This could include research into applications in food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other industries.
Training and Capacity Building: GARI will provide training and educational programs for local farmers, researchers, and entrepreneurs, fostering a skilled workforce and ensuring the long-term success of the gum arabic industry in Yobe State.
Technology Transfer and Commercialization: The institute will facilitate the transfer of new technologies and knowledge to local businesses, supporting the development of a thriving gum arabic industry.
