Group tasks Yobe govt on assent to disability bill

In an efforts to provide equal opportunity for the people with disabilities in Yobe state, project trust under Connected Development (CODE) has called on Yobe state government to ensure assent of disability law in the state.

The state support team for the project trust and country director follow the money, Mu’azu Alhaji Modu, made the call on Wednesday during a town hall meeting in Damaturu.

He said they have invited government officials from different MDAs, people with disabilities, as well as members of House of Assembly to have a robust conversation around disability law, accountability, transparency and how citizens can be engaged in the process of governance in the state.

“We brought representative of people living with disabilities, civil society to have this conversation, to ensure that Yobe state government passed disability law as well as put measures for effective implementation of the law in Yobe state .

“The bill has passed first and second reading since 2021 and has already been submitted to Yobe state Governor for assent, but the Governor sent back the law to the House of Assembly for amendments.

“The House has amended the law and returned it back to the Yobe state Government for the assent but unfortunately till date the law has been not passed into law.

” Yobe is among the first state that started the process of implementation of domestication of disability law in Nigeria which was started in 2019,” he said.

He called on the state to ensure assent to the bill.

On his part, the Deputy Director of Legislation at the House, Malam Adamu Haruna, confirmed that the bill had passed its first and second readings and is currently before the state executive council for endorsement.

He expressed optimism that the executive arm of government would take the necessary steps to enact the law.
