Iran Warns of War if Israel Attacks Lebanon Amid Heightening Tensions

136

Iran issued a stark warning on Saturday, stating that it and its regional allies, collectively known as the “Resistance Fronts,” would confront Israel if it launched an attack on Lebanon.

This development comes amidst increasing fears of a broader regional conflict involving Israel and Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement.

The situation has been escalating, with both sides exchanging fire almost daily since the conflict in Gaza began.

The exchange of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah has intensified this month. Both parties have escalated their rhetoric, with Israel’s military recently announcing that its plans for an offensive in Lebanon had been “approved and validated.” In response, Hezbollah has threatened that no part of Israel would be spared in a full-scale conflict.

Iran’s mission to New York dismissed Israel’s threats as “psychological warfare” in a social media post, but added a grave warning: “Should [Israel] embark on full-scale military aggression, an obliterating war will ensue. All options, including the full involvement of all Resistance Fronts, are on the table.”

The war in Gaza, which began in October, was triggered by a surprise attack from Hamas militants on southern Israel. Although Iran supports Hamas, it has denied any direct involvement in the attack. Nevertheless, Iran has praised the assault, aligning with its historical stance of opposition towards Israel, which it has not recognized since the 1979 revolution.

Hezbollah, an Iran-backed militant group based in Lebanon, has been actively involved in the conflict, launching attacks on northern Israel.

In solidarity with the Palestinians, Iran-backed rebels in Yemen have also targeted commercial ships in the Red Sea. The broader regional tension has further intensified with these actions.

In April, tensions between Iran and Israel soared following an airstrike that destroyed Iran’s consulate in Damascus, resulting in the death of seven Revolutionary Guards, including two generals.

Iran retaliated with a drone and missile attack on Israel. Subsequently, Iran’s state media reported explosions in Isfahan, with US media quoting American officials who stated that Israel had conducted retaliatory strikes.

The complex web of alliances and hostilities in the region makes the situation particularly volatile. Iran’s steadfast support for various groups opposing Israel, including Hamas and Hezbollah, is a significant factor in the ongoing conflict.

The potential for a broader confrontation remains high, with both sides preparing for the possibility of a larger-scale war.

The international community is closely watching these developments, concerned that any escalation could lead to widespread instability in the Middle East.

Diplomatic efforts are being made to de-escalate the situation, but the entrenched positions of both Iran and Israel, along with their respective allies, make a peaceful resolution challenging.

As the conflict continues, the risk of miscalculation or unintended escalation looms large.

The warnings from Iran underscore the gravity of the situation, signaling that any aggressive action by Israel could trigger a significant and potentially devastating regional war.
