Kebbi Perm Sec Retracts False Claims About Homosexuality, Offers Apology to Muslim Community

Nasiru Abubakar Kigo, Permanent Secretary of Cabinet Affairs in Kebbi State, has issued a public apology and retracted a statement he made regarding the prevalence of homosexuality and lesbianism in Sokoto and Kebbi States.

Kigo’s initial remarks, delivered during a public lecture in Birnin Kebbi during Ramadan, presented inaccurate statistics and claimed the existence of registered gay and lesbian groups in the two states. Investigations later revealed these claims to be baseless.

Following the suspension of Kigo by the Kebbi State Government and referral to relevant religious authorities, the Kebbi State Council of Ulama summoned the Permanent Secretary. Kigo admitted his statement was unfounded and publicly withdrew his remarks at a press briefing on Sunday.

“I acknowledge that I made a mistake and deeply regret offending the sensibilities of Muslims in Sokoto, Kebbi, and beyond,” said Kigo. “I apologize for the false statistics I presented concerning homosexuality and lesbianism. I urge anyone who has seen the offensive video clips to delete them immediately.”

Sheikh Abdurrahman Isa Jega, Chairman of the Kebbi State Council of Ulama, emphasized the importance of acknowledging and correcting mistakes, citing verses from the Quran and Hadith. He accepted Kigo’s apology and appealed to everyone to carefully consider the consequences of their words.

“Nasiru Abubakar Kigo is a member of our Council. He has admitted his error and apologized,” stated Sheikh Jega. “I appeal to all Ulama, clerics, students, and the general public to weigh their words carefully before speaking.”

Sheikh Jega also offered an apology on behalf of the Council to the governments and people of Sokoto and Kebbi States, and to the entire Muslim Ummah.

Sheikh Umar Isa Magaji, Chairman of the Kebbi State Zakkat, Sadaqat and Waqf Board, confirmed that the Council investigated Kigo’s comments and found them to be unfounded.

“The Council acted swiftly to correct the narrative, in line with Islamic principles. According to the teachings of Umar bin Khattab (RA), a Muslim who makes a mistake must promptly correct it,” said Sheikh Magaji. “Kigo’s statement impacted not just the people of Sokoto and Kebbi, but the entire Muslim community. That’s why the Council presented him before the press to issue a retraction and apology.”
