Kebbi: Yauri Rigata festival to hold Feb. 4 -7, organisers
The Organising Committee of Yauri Rigata and Cultural Festival, says the 5th edition will hold between Feb. 4 and Feb. 7 in the Yauri Emirate of Kebbi.
The National Chairman of the festival and Secretary to Kebbi Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala, made the announcement on Saturday, while briefing newsmen in Birnin Kebbi.
Bala said the festival, popularly known as “Rigata,” is a Gunganci word meaning marine war, which, in its broader social context, connotes buoyancy, valour and prestige.
According to him, Rigata has deep historical roots, dating back to about 200 years, when it served as a demonstration of naval strength by the Gungu people along the River Niger.
“The festival involves riverine manoeuvres, including water sports and entertainment.
“In the past, warriors boarded canoes of various sizes, armed with different weapons, to confront dangerous hippopotamuses on the River Niger,” he said.
Bala explained that the exercise required expertise in canoe paddling and naval tactics, and also functioned as a training ground for young Gungu warriors.

The SSG noted that the modern revival of Rigata as a state-recognised cultural festival took place during the reign of Dr Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi, the Emir of Yauri.
He said that the 2026 festival would feature a trade fair exhibition, agricultural show, cultural performances, water sports and the Rigata main event.
“This year’s festival, like previous editions, is designed to showcase the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the Yauri Emirate, while also promoting commerce, tourism and agriculture,” he said.
BaLa expressed appreciation to Gov. Nasir Idris for his unwavering support to ensuring the success of the event.
