Comrade Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), has reaffirmed labour’s demand for a N250,000 minimum wage following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu. While the Federal Government and the Organised Private Sector have agreed on a N62,000 minimum wage, labour insists on N250,000.
President Tinubu indicated that he would need time to consult with other stakeholders before presenting the new minimum wage bill to the National Assembly. Speaking to State House Correspondents after the meeting, Ajaero emphasized that the labour leaders were there for discussions, not negotiations, and that talks would continue next week.
The meeting, which lasted over an hour, saw labour leaders leaving to report back to their members before returning to the presidential villa. Festus Osifo, President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), noted that while they explained their position to the President, he also shared his perspective. However, details of the discussions were not disclosed.
