Lack of good shepherds responsible for Nigeria’s woes- Rev Fr Haanya
Callistus Agwaza, Jalingo
Following rising insecurity and the general tensions in the country, Rev. Fr. Anthony Haanya on Sunday said that Nigeria is in desperate need of good leaders who will steer the country back on the right track before it is too late to salvage the country.
Haanya, said this at a sermon to mark this year’s feast of the Good Shepherd at Saint Justina’s Catholic Church Mayodassa in Jalingo Diocese.
He noted that lack of quality leadership over the years has plunged the country on the precipice and it will take a leader with compassion, sincerity of heart, political will and genuineness of heart to restore sanity and return the country on the path of progress and warned that doom awaits leaders who are leading the sheep astray.

“You are aware of the scripture which says Doom for the Shepherd who allow my sheep to be scattered and lost. Anyone in leadership positions with people who look up to them is a Shepherd and must take responsibility for the sheep under his care genuinely.
“A good Shepherd is one who practically shows concern for the good of his sheep and identify with the needs and challenges of his people and not just by paying lips service. A good shepherd shows no discrimination amongst his sheep but treat them with equal love and tenderness. Can we truly say our leaders today can take a bullet for the people? Can we confidently say any of our leaders today care about the good and well-being of the people?
“How come they make good promises during the campaign and come down to the people when looking for votes and yet become completely unreachable by the same people who voted them into power. How come they conveniently forget all the promises they make when canvassing for votes. Those who dream to be in leadership must serve with fidelity when and if they get to leadership, in accordance with the will of God.
“Sadly, no day goes by without horrible stories of how people are brutally massacred and there are no leaders to take responsibility. How come our leaders are not willing to take the bullet for the people they are watching over? How come no one is taking responsibility for the failures? A hiring will always run off at the first sign of danger and abandon the sheep. This is what we see so far. However, we need a good shepherd who stands his grounds to protect the sheep at all cost” Haanya said.
He further called on the people to be good followers and to embrace peace rather than taking arms against one another especially against security operatives who are working hard to ensure security of lives and property.
He said that “the sheep must also be responsible enough to give leadership the needed cooperation and criticize constructively. The quality of leadership, to a large extent, is a reflection of the quality of followership.
