Leah Sharibu: CAN urges FG to secure abducted schoolgirl’s release
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged the Federal Government to expedite action to secure the release of Leah Sharibu, a schoolgirl who was abducted by insurgents in 2018.
CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Oko, made the plea in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.
The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) recalls that Sharibu was abducted on Feb. 19 2018 alongside 109 other girls from her secondary school in Dapchi, Yobe.
While her school mates were later released, she has remained in captivity, allegedly for refusing to renounce her Christian faith.
Okoh appealed to the government to urgently do everything possible to ensure that Sharibu and others still in captivity are released by their Boko Haram captors.
He noted that, while other girls were released, Sharibu was not, due to her steadfastness in her faith.
The CAN president added that this has made her a symbol of resilience and religious freedom.
“Feb. 20, 2025, makes it seven years since Leah Sharibu was abducted by Boko Haram insurgents on Feb. 19, 2018.
“CAN stands in solidarity with her family and all who continue to bear the pain of her absence.
“Leah’s courage and steadfast faith in the face of unimaginable adversity remain a beacon of hope and inspiration to us all,” he said.

Okoh further said that Sharibu’s prolonged captivity reflected the broader dangers of insecurity in Nigeria, and the urgent need to protect religious rights.
He also encouraged Nigerians to unite in prayer and advocacy for her and others, who are still in the custody of the insurgents.
CAN reaffirmed its commitment to justice and peace, and urged decisive action from all stakeholders toward ending violence and restoring peace and security in Nigeria.
Sharibu’s story continues to inspire global attention, as her family and immediate community remain hopeful for her safe return
