Not a few Yobe residents have declared that the Yobe State Governor Mallam Mai Mala Buni’s administration’s recent signing of the contract for the construction of a flyover bridge and underpass marks a significant milestone in the state’s development journey.
While hailing the move, some of the stakeholders who spoke with Arewa PUNCH said the project is expected to be a lasting legacy of Mai Mala Buni’s tenure.
Hon. Usman Barau Sugum, the former Speaker of the Yobe State House of Assembly and former State Commissioner for Ministry of Works and Water Resources shared his insights on Sunday in an exclusive interview with Arewa PUNCH in Damaturu.
Sugum emphasised that Damaturu, being the metropolis, needs projects of this magnitude to compete with its peers and surpass those created before it.
“The construction of the Damaturu International Cargo Airport is another testament to Governor Buni’s commitment to infrastructural growth and development,” Sugum added.
He further stressed the importance of completing ongoing road and drainage projects, markets, and cottage industries, ensuring that they are commissioned to pave the way for new initiatives.
Sugum noted further that “this is a crucial aspect of the legislative committees’ role in ensuring that approved projects are implemented and utilised as dividends of democracy for the people,” even as he highlighted “the significance of the legislature’s functional roles in checks and balances, justifying the confidence and mandate given to them as representatives of the electorate.”
Commenting on the political trajectory of Yobe State, the ex-Speaker stressed, “As Yobe State prepares for the 2027 elections, it stands at a critical juncture. The current administration, led by Governor Mai Mala Buni, has built upon the foundations laid by his predecessor, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, achieving significant milestones.”

He added, “we all can see the notable developments, including the major investments in estate and market development, upgraded healthcare infrastructure, expanded services, and enhanced rural road connectivity.
“Additionally, new ministries, departments, and agencies have been established, with personnel recruited to support the state’s growth,” he explained.
Sugum maintained that these developments have positioned Yobe State for continued growth and progress. The upcoming election will be crucial in determining the state’s future trajectory.
The ex-commissioner concluded by affirming the growing consensus that the state requires a sitting governor who can provide hands-on leadership and supervision.
This he said is particularly important given Yobe’s desire to compete favourably with its peers.
