At Fomon bus stop, Ewu Owa, Gberigbe road, Ikorodu Lagos, a Toyota Corolla car became ensnared in a perilous spot.
Eyewitnesses recounted how three occupants battled to free the vehicle from the deep, flood-covered crevice. Suddenly, one man collapsed amid the floodwaters, prompting frantic attempts to revive him. Despite efforts, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
The victim, hailing from Abuja, had journeyed to meet his in-laws for his late wife’s burial arrangements, only to meet his demise on the ill-fated road. The incident underscores the dire state of Gberigbe road, worsening with each passing year, particularly during rainfall.
Daily, numerous vehicles, tricycles, and motorcycles succumb to the treacherous conditions at Fomon bus stop. Exploiting the plight of stranded motorists, opportunistic individuals known as “Omonile” demand exorbitant fees, up to ₦5,000, for assistance.
For more difficult extractions, heavy-duty trucks are summoned, with owners compelled to pay ₦7,000 for a chain if not already equipped.
The prevalence of motorcycles plunging into the floodwaters with passengers further compounds the area’s challenges, with residents enduring heightened transportation costs.
Urgent intervention is awaited from the government to alleviate the plight of Gberigbe residents plagued by this notorious road.
