The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council on Thursday commiserated with the Sokoto state government and the victims of the central market inferno.
The market was gutted by fire last Tuesday.
In a statement issued by the council secretary Abubakar Auwal described the disaster as a great loss because the market is the “most valuable asset” to the people of the state, the statement also commended the timely intervention of the state government.
The council specifically applauded Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for setting up a committee under the leadership of his deputy, Mannir Dan’iya to ascertain the cause of the inferno and assess the damage caused by the fire.
It hoped that the committee will complete its works within the given time frame, as this would enable the state government to assist the victims in earnest.
NUJ also urged the government to ensure the provision of motorable roads and fire equipements in all the markets across the state to avoid future reoccurrence.
It also called on the traders to support and cooperate with the committee in order to do a thorough job.
In its efforts it also commended the men of the federal and state fire services who worked tireless to quench the fire.
The Council however, thanked the Governors of Kebbi and Rivers States for supporting the victims at this trying time.
